The Ginchy Signature Silk Press Process

Prep

It’s all about the prep, Baby! A clarifying and chelating shampoo is completed to ensure the cleanest canvas, free from the hard-water build up we have in Vancouver/Portland. A moisturizing shampoo starts the process of putting moisture back into the hair, with a deep conditioning steam treatment to help lock in the moisture before blow-drying.

Indirect & Direct Heat

The part everyone hates loves (at least Ginchy Girls love it)! Leave-in conditioners are added to your hair as needed depending on your hair type and condition. Steps to protect against frizz and reversion are also taken. All of this prep ensures your hair stays moisturized throughout the life of your silk press. Direct heat is kept to a minimum so as to not damage the hair. This includes when using only one pass of the hot comb on roots and straightener through the rest of the hair.

Wrap & Finishing Touches

Once your hair is straightened, it’s time to set it and forget it! Your hair is wrapped and you are placed under the dryer for a final time while the products used are fused within your strands and your cuticle is set to lock it all in while keeping the silky, flowiness of your hair intact to ensure no touchups are needed between appointments.

✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

  • A silk press is a non-chemical technique used to straighten natural hair using heat tools like flat irons, creating a silky, smooth finish without altering the curl pattern permanently.

  • If maintained properly, a silk press can last between two to four weeks, depending on factors like lifestyle and hair care in between appointments.

  • While a silk press involves heat, if done correctly with proper care and moisturizing treatments, it should not cause long-term damage. However, excessive heat or improper technique can lead to breakage and heat damage.

While it's possible to do a silk press at home, many recommend seeking a professional to avoid improper techniques that could cause heat damage.

  • To keep your silk press looking fresh, avoid water, humidity, and sweat. Wrapping your hair at night and using a satin bonnet can also help preserve the style.

As a silk press is temporary, your natural curls will return once the hair is washed.

  • At Ginchy, the silk press process--including products used and the final hair wrap at the end--creates a smoother, silkier result.

Unlike the older pressing comb and pressing oil methods, which gives a polished result, but not as sleek and flowy as a silk press.

  • Most experts recommend getting a silk press every three to four months to avoid heat damage and maintain hair health.

However, at Ginchy, because we offer a membership service with additional deep conditioning treatments, more frequent silk presses are possible with no damage.
